Small Business Ideas on Handling Clients
A small business
often believes that a client is a God send. They try so hard to
please the clients that they bend over backward. In doing so they
neglect their own business, their family, and their right to fun
and frolic. They shackle away their lives and they don't understand
why things aren't going right.
Why you shouldn't suffer just
because you're a small business!
Stop looking at yourself as a supplier. You must get out of your
head the idea that you are a small business. You're clients are
not doing you a favour. No siree! They have chosen you because you
represent the best value to their business.
In many a case, the client has done his due diligence.
He has checked out other small businesses like yours that supply
the same product or service. And has then decided on you. So in
effect, the client is not doing you any big favour.
They want to work with you.
The question is, do you want
to work with them?
Let me give you an analogy. You're a coach. You're the best coach
in the whole wide world in that particular sport. Who would you
choose to coach? Would you choose athletes that make excuses, push
you around and are always grumbling?
Or would you rather choose
a star?
When you choose an athlete who won't do the hard yards and practice..
Who mumbles about how cold it is and how hard the track is..That
athlete goes nowhere.
And you're lumped with them. Even though you may
be the best in the world, your reputation and mood is linked to
theirs. If they do badly, it will be reflected on you.
It's not different for small
business clients
Why choose a lousy client? Sure you need to eat right now and yes,
you do whatever it takes. But over time, consciously remember that
you're a coach. As you grow in stature and ablity, remember to start
disqualifying clients that are always putting themselves (and you)
down.
Find the clients that are bent on winning. Find
those that are disciplined and hard working. Find those for whom
the sky is not the limit.
These clients will win the trophies and cover
themselves and you in glory. They will move up the rankings and
challenge themselves and you in the process. They will be less concerned
about the economy and more concerned with the long term perspective.
It's time you made your choice
Make the decision today to choose the right client. You didn't go
for the first person you met in a bar, when you looked for a mate,
did you? So why should it be different with clients? Find the clients
that are right for you both emotionally and monetarily.
Remember you're a consultant
Never forget that. You're not some crappy supplier. The client needs
you and your ideas to grow. If you keep that in mind and start behaving
like an equal partner, you will be shown respect. From there on,
both you and your client will grow exponentially.
Small Business Rules for Clients
1) Remember you are a consultant. Behave like one. You wouldn't
let someone push you around in real life. There's no reason why
you should do it in business. Be firm and be confident.
2) The best coaches in the world get the best
athletes
Do you think that's a coincidence? Not a chance. They consciously
weed out the whiners. They stick with the good ones even when the
going gets tough. They know they will come out on the other side.
You too should choose clients carefully or you'll end up with losers.
And you'll lose too in the final scheme of things.
3) Do whatever it takes
Make sure you have food on the table for starters. Don't go around
dumping clients. Beef up your knowledge and your ability. As you
do that, start picking up good clients one at a time. Bigger is
not always better. Better is better! Over time, like blue chip shares,
you'll have a portfolio that will bring you riches and an immense
sense of satisfaction.
