The Side Effects Of Expertise

Author: Sean D'Souza

Yes, yes, so everyone tells you you should become an expert. And yes, you know that you'll earn more and get more customers. But there's also a side-effect to expertise.

It's called influence. And when you're influential, people pay attention.

What do I mean? Well, read on.

Here's a letter from a company

XYZ Inc. manufactures the XYZ , and the XYZZZ noise canceling audio headsets.  I went to your web site and see what you do and I am impressed.  I would like to offer you our XYZZZ which is a $199 value.  We feel the XYZZZ is better than Bose and the only thing I would ask is that you let me know what you think.  If you agree about the noise canceling and audio quality, then tell your friends.

Please let me know if you would like to make this exchange and I will be glad to take care of that.  I thank you for your time.

This letter is not an isolated one

I want you to know that this is just one of many things you get to review. If you need a book, a program, a series that costs thousands of dollars, it's possible to get it on a ‘review' basis. And unless you can demonstrate the factor of expertise; unless you can demonstrate the ability to be ‘somewhat the best in your field,' you risk missing out on the goodies in life.

The question must arise: How do you build expertise?

You build expertise by documentation. What you think is basic and easy, is not basic and easy to a customer. When a customer looks at what you do, they are awed by your ability. Just like a 5 year old is amazed at what a 7 year old knows, the same concept extends to you and your customer. So start documenting, if only putting together the ‘contents'.

You create a mailing list: A website is the easiest way to get people to sign up. You may never want or need to sell them anything. But you are speaking to an audience. And that's what is important. You're an influencer, and..um…influence people.

Go on, tell me you're not an expert. And I'll show you a liar.

We're all experts in something or the other. The important steps to creating expertise are 1) Documentation 2) Creating Audiences that listen.

That's it.

The information presented is top notch. I’ve been doing some research on the topic and this post answered several questions.
